Banasura Sagar Dam
Banasura Sagar is an earth dam at Padinjarathara, holding back the Karamanathodu, a tributary of the Kabini. It is the largest earth dam in India and the second largest in Asia, and the reservoir behind it is scattered with small islands — the tops of the hills the water rose around.
It was built as part of the Banasurasagar Project, begun in 1979, to supply irrigation and drinking water to a district that runs short in the dry months. India's first floating solar power plant was installed on the reservoir.
