Edakkal Caves
Two natural caves on Ambukutty Mala at Sultan Bathery, 1,200 metres above sea level, beside an ancient trade route that ran between the highlands around Mysore and the ports of the Malabar coast.
Cut into the rock inside are petroglyphs believed to date to at least 6,000 BCE. Stone Age carvings like these are rare, and besides those at Shenthurini in Kollam they are the only known examples in South India.
